Act 11: CURTAIN OF FEARS
Based on the story "Faces of Courage", Sybil, the main character surprised me with her undominating will and courage, but in another point of view, I feel pity for her experience and what she undergo during the world war 2. With the point of view of my own, I built an installation with the idea of how Sybil was tortured by the Japanese soldier by using the element of fear. The concept of the installation is to project the feeling and perspective of Sybil during the world war 2 as well as what she undergo and faced especially when she was capture and tortured by the Japanese soldier.
In this piece of art, I choosen plank wood, bulk wire, glass fragment and lots of cleaver for this installation and these materials were choosen wisely in order to manifest fear. First, I use two pieces of plank wood and stick it together as the base of the installation. Then, the plank wood are wrap with the bulk wire. Next, the cleaver was arrayed in both side of the plank wood in an extraordinary way to produce a synchronized form with the handle of the cleaver. After that, pieces of glass fragment are added and paste randomly in the model. Last but not least, the installation are refine with details like blood stain and burn mark.
Furthermore, this installation is build mainly to present what Sybil had goon through and the feeling of fear. Based on the story "Faces of Courage", Sybil was mercilessly tortured by the Japanese soilder. She was kicked, punched and whipped by the torturer and her backbone was broke during the torture too. Beside that, the torturer tore out her fingernails and toenails ruthlessly. Sybil even watch her daughter being hang on tree and almost got burn livingly by the torturer. Thus, I combine all the element together into the installation to symbolise Sybil's experiences with my point of view.
Throughout the whole process of this project, I experience the courage of facing fear even being threaten physically or mentally. Sybil persona was like a cleaver that slice, chop, cut through a living which ego against the cold, lifeless sharp steel blades. With these, a realism decontructive path of blade represent the hardship she undergo and the pain she experience just like the blade cut through the wooden plank. However, she was realised from the dungeon as a hero after the war, so the handle of the cleaver that organize through a syncronized from manifest her liberation just like a wing in flight which signify freedom.
As a conclusion, this installation projected the image of the fear, pain and feeling of what Sybil undergo during the hard time of the war. With the similar increased authenticity between the fear and pain as well as courage and freedom, this installation vested upon the persona whom the handle is held. Nevertheless, with the point of view other than fear, this installation leads toward the loyalty and love of Sybil toward country, friends and family as well as the dissolution of the ego.
