Act 10: FOREST OF NAILS
A shocking story set with regards to "Faces of Courage" Japanese control of Malaya incorporated on a primary nurturing figure of a spouse by Sybil Kathigasu later a much overlooked courageous woman. In my perspective, i had saw her patriotic to her country no matter how the Japanese soldier tortured her. She not even gave a single clue or information to them until the end. The concept is to project the feeling of misery and pain during the world war as well as what she undergo and faced in that moment.
In this piece of artwork, i used crate woods, different types of nail and screw, cloths, brief notes, food coloring and blowtorch to contribute the scene of merciless and dread of war for this installation. First, i tear the cloths into small piece then driven all the nails and screws with the shred into a long piece of crate wood. Next, i cut the other piece of crate wood into four parts with a saw to connect it up with metal joint and screw for the base. After that, the brief notes was stuck on the crate wood to represent the glimmer of hope throughout her tough pathway. In addition, i mixed my red food coloring with a little bit of water then pour it on my installation to express the bloody spectacle. Lastly, tragic sight of burnt was created by the blowtorch to bring out the misery occasion.
Furthermore, this installation is construct essentially to introduce what Sybil had undergo and loyal to her country. Sybil loyalty just like nails crashed into her bones, crashing into the soul throwing an intimating torment, blood spilling out, perhaps spouting exhibiting the inescapable torments endured by the criminal of war, the implied. The sorts of nails signifier of the reshaping of the nationalists, saints of war, trees and the personas of divided and broken inner selves all resound through the woods of torments through the illusionary ways of hope, got non other from the pages of the portrayal of a primary protective figure of a spouse.
All through the procedure of this undertaking, i experience patriotism is imperative for the freedom of a country. A patriotic person like Sybil will always be prepared to forfeit her life for the love for her country. A patriot is unfading. Sybil love her own country. She do numerous things for the benefit of her country. Patriotism is a noble feeling of the mind. It is said that mother and motherland are better than heaven.
In conclusion, this installation project show up the patriotic of Sybil and what she suffer amid the hard time of the war. Although she been tortured in numerous ways and times, she never give up or spread out any information for the Japanese soldier but oath to keep patriotism.
