We attempted another design intervention with an annex building tug neatly at the end of the main administration block. Apparently the design of the admin block has been given so much attention to its main facade, resulting the end block being very much neglected with a huge blank wall. This wall is unfortunately facing an open air amphitheater, bounces glare and heat towards it and making the public space almost "impotent". Similar to our previous work with tropical design, large overhangs and sun shading were introduce. With the CG, it looks stunning with the B&W backgrounds.
THE COMPLETED WORK...
Originally this building was designed to double up as a viewing platform for the Plaza, thus the external corridor was introduced with the exposed staircase. Since the cantilevered structure was introduced to brace the sun screen, it would have been natural to doubled up as the corridor. This is a similar approach while we attempted Sixth Form Center. Such feature was removed due to cost factor. Even so, now at it stands the Annex building act as a termination point to the Admin building. With the continuous walkways linking the existing Patio galvanized the entire linkages. The fair face brick wall was introduced as a unifying elements derived from the Admin building.
THE WORK IN PROGRESS...
The brief require the building to be completed in 2 months time due to the Summer Holiday for the school. The option of speed shall be reflected in the decision to use Steel Structure instead of the Reinforce Concrete. The greatest challenge is always the substructure work, for which the as-built of the buried utilities are not accurate. Upon completion, the superstructure is up within week. The Bond Deck system is employed to speed up work further without the necessary of plywood form work. Clean and precised construction can be easily achieved and the client is very surprise to have the contractor achieve such. The client was acceptance to the Steel aesthetic such as the exposed beam and column. Such is the features that depart itself in terms of stylistic against the existing RC Admin building. The only labor intensive work remained are the fair face brick work at the rear and the casting of the RC staircase. The roof is completed within week so as to allow internal finishes to commence. True to its promises, the entire construction was finally completed in 2 months.
