My name is Ng Chen Yin, people call me Yinnie. I studied 2 years of Diploma in Architectural Studies in UCSI University and completed my 6 months internship as an architect assistant in year 2017. I found myself as a play-safe ‘designer’. I emphasizes practicality more than anything in designing. Therefore, I always play with geometrics instead of organic shapes and forms. However, after my experience in the industry, I came to realization that time in university are the time you could do crazier things. So this time, I aspire to create designs that are unique and different from what I have created in the past.

My aspirations to achieve are as simple as it could be - to cherish the value of teamwork between oneself and another & to learn from the experiences of others. “Whatever good things we build, end up building us.” I look forward to share inspirations with our group of people in constructing ideas and developing designs. I believe with continuous effort and struggle we could all build a better self throughout the journey of self-exploration, especially with the forces of working together

What are the ingredients in you that you think will contribute to d:CON 4 |
I believe in any divisions of partnerships or team there are always big picture person and detail oriented person. I considered myself as a big picture thinker. I see bigger perspective and able to prioritize. However, I can also be messy and disorganized too. With the opportunity to work in a group of 16 like d:CON 4, I would try my best to complement the team in different situations in the future. As a team-player, I could easily work with different people from different backgrounds, without losing my own principles and mindset

“Is that you? Or your ego?” I tend to compare myself to other people. On a positive note, I see others as my motivation to push myself to excel. I fear failure, so I would not let myself fail. But I guess it is good to focus on your drive to success rather than the negative of comparison. Still, trying to strike a balance. Guess this is what makes me, me. Competitive, determined and emotional.

How would you construe the current assignment in d:CON 4 |
The current assignment explores the narrative in architectural designs which creates different level of meaning and connection to different groups of people. It is a challenge to portray or translate a story into an installation or structure. After reading the story of Sybil Kathigasu, her nation’s most celebrated war heroine, her unshakable faith and remarkable courage are what moved me the most. Words could not fully interpret Her great spirit for service and sacrifice.
It is no doubt a sad story, but a moving one. For this assignment, I wanted to portray not only her strength and determination but also her beauty and love for her mother, husband and her daughters. A strong but soft concept, with flower as the main subject or form and bold colour red which associates with meanings of love and courage but also blood and bandage. |
