ACT01: PORTRAITURE
What make human a human? Emotion & feelings. Humans feel all kinds of different emotions. They use them to react to different situations. Over time, this list of basic emotions has been added to, subtracted from and reshaped based on the idea that human emotions are universal. Besides, the emotion & feelings create a human with a character. With the character, human will express their emotion in their action. And their action will affect the other person’s thought.
As the example which I take from the story of “Dawn of Mercy”, Sybil Kathigasu, the woman who like a sparking shinning in the dark. At the same time, giving warmth to the victim without any doubt. Besides, Sybil was caught by the Japanese soldier and tortured her mental and physical in the way of inhuman but she never fail for keeping the secret from the Japanese. Her kind of soul was pure and noble as shown as the story told. Her courage act gives a very good impact to the people. So, I was decided to bring out her character in my installation which makes people to better understanding of Sybil.
In the whole story, the whole Malaya was trapped in a full of confusion situation. Only gunfire and lament were surrounding the whole town, Papan. Papan, where was Sybil Kathigasu became a heroine. She was courage and kind-hearted. Along the way, Sybil was leading those victims to hide away from Japanese and tracking them by using an old radio for communicate the news from the outside. But at last, Sybil was surrender and caught by Japanese for keeping the people away from them. By a tantalising quirk of fate, she had to live in a life that most people couldn’t imagine. Her sacrifice didn’t make any changes. She was tortured by Japanese and her family also with the inhuman way. Even if she was abused and forced to watch her daughter threatened to burnt her alive, she still rejected to divulge anything. She felt that she had this responsible to guide and help the suffering people which was given by the god. She also believed that the god had given her strength to fight against the threats. She was insisted to do all these things for the people even they were non-blood related and dragged her family into suffer. This is all because of her pure kind heart that makes her character.
After the overall of the process, I have come out with some ideas and sketches developing for achieving the final concept of my model. Firstly, I am using different kinds of the material in a line which are arranged accordingly. Each material represented the character of Sybil. With the line of the material arranged, it will show a picture view of Sybil’ face by watching the materials stacking together. This shown as what build Sybil’s character. From the side view, people would see the material pieces by pieces arranged standing vertically. It shown the pure kind hearted of Sybil. The concrete block was done with some cracks. It represents the strength of her mind that how she stands against Japanese. The messy glass pieces are shown the pure and clean heart that she has although she was in a worse situation. With the wire mesh surrounded by the chain, it shows that she been trapped in Japanese’s hands and threatened badly. Last but not least, all of this installation’s purpose is to show Sybil’s character.
