Act 14: FLIGHT OF FREEDOM
Flight of Freedom represent Sybil’s courage when she was locked up. The cage represent the prison that locked up her. And the wings represent herself. The wings could symbolise freedom that she had during her locked up which she can get information freely and she manage to become allies with the new guards in the prison, and protection that she helped the prisoners who was suffering from sickness.
This idea came from the courage I’ve seen in Sybil during her lock up period. She never give in when she was tortured and questioned multiple times by the Japanese soldiers. She fought back them as she can. She manage to secure her pride. In the prison, she manage to get clean clothes from outside which she can sneak in information but with certain risk. Then, she had the courage to talk to the new guards which are quite well-trained and much more disciplined. She is even able to become allies with them and get her own freedom in the cell. She had the freedom that normal people could not get when in the same situation with her because nobody would have the courage to talk to those disciplined guards.
Deconstruction as explained in Derrida is used in this project. The idea is to dismantle the narrative of the book and deconstruct it in the attempt to understand the construction of the story itself. In which, I dismantled the whole story and remove the excessive parts that I do not want to use it in my installation. Then, I focus on the keyword that I would like to use which is “Courage”. I built up my own installation based on the keyword “Courage”, therefore later including some other factors such as “Freedom” and “Protection” resulted from the “Courage”.
My first idea is a pair of wings that break through the cage and destroyed the cage but the dimension of the installation is far too different from the assignment brief and lack of meaning. Then, the idea generated into a pair of wings that broke out of cage and flew out to the sky and turn into skeletal wings that represent the author’s life. I would like to use plaster or cement as my base but it could be quite heavy and can break easily if I am not cautious enough. Then, I changed the base of the installation into wood plank and a back support is attached so the “wings” can be attached to the back support to show a more realistic flying movement. In the beginning of constructing the “wings” of the “flight”, plastic fork had been used but it lacks of persuasive factor. Then, the material of the “wings” is switched to metal forks.
My work represent the timeline starting from when Sybil is prisoned and later been set free. Which started from the Climax of the story till the end but it is more on the locked up part. Then it will lead to Act 15 which have more weight on her life after prisoned by the Japanese. Each work in the d:CON 4 group represent stages of Sybil’s life and part of her identity.
